How to promote your business online in India

Updated 11 October 2026, a 3-minute read

Start with the free things that put you where people already look: a Google Business listing, WhatsApp Business and a Facebook Page. Then ask happy customers for reviews. Paid ads come last, once those are in place, because an ad sends people to check you out and they should find something when they do.

Claim your Google Business listing

When someone searches "cake shop near me", Google shows a map with three businesses. Being one of them is free. Search for your shop on Google Maps, claim it, and fill in the hours, phone number, photos and a few products with prices.

A listing with 15 recent photos and correct Sunday timings beats a bare one with only an address. Check it every month, since wrong hours cost you walk-ins.

Set up WhatsApp Business properly

Most Indian customers would rather message than call. The free WhatsApp Business app gives you a business profile, a catalogue and quick replies. Add your address, timings and ten best-selling items with photos.

Use Status the way a shop uses its front window. New stock on Monday, today’s special at 11 am, a festival offer the week before. People who saved your number see it without you sending a single message.

Keep a Facebook Page and Instagram account alive

You don’t need to post daily. Two or three posts a week showing real work is plenty: the cake that went out this morning, a before-and-after from the salon, a student’s result with permission.

Shoot with your phone near a window. Customers trust a slightly rough photo of your own counter more than a polished stock picture.

Ask for reviews, every week

Before visiting a new dentist or tailor, most people read the Google reviews. A shop with 80 reviews at 4.6 stars gets the call ahead of a better shop with 4 reviews.

Ask at the moment the customer is happiest, and make it easy by sending the review link on WhatsApp. Five new reviews a month adds up to sixty in a year.

Then pay for ads

Free methods reach people who already know you or are searching right now. Ads reach everyone else in your area. On Facebook and Instagram you can show an offer only to women aged 25 to 45 within 4 km of your boutique, and pay only for that.

Start small, with one clear offer and an end date. "Free demo class this Saturday" or "20% off on bridal bookings till the 30th" gives people a reason to reply now. Send them to a lead form or to WhatsApp, and call back the same day.

  • One offer per ad
  • The areas your customers really come from
  • A photo of your own shop, product or work
  • A way to reply in one tap

What to skip in the first year

A local shop rarely needs a custom website, an app or a monthly SEO package to begin with. Those help later. Bulk SMS and bought contact lists mostly annoy people.

Spend the first few months on the five steps above and keep count of where each new customer heard about you. After that you’ll know which one deserves more money.

Questions

How can I promote my business online for free?

Claim your Google Business listing, set up WhatsApp Business with a catalogue, post real photos on a Facebook Page and Instagram, and ask customers for Google reviews.

How do I get more customers quickly?

Paid ads are the fastest route, since they can bring enquiries within a day or two of going live. The free steps take weeks to build up but keep working after the ad stops.

Does a small business need digital marketing?

It needs to be easy to find and easy to message. For most shops that means a Google listing, WhatsApp and, when there is budget, local ads. The rest can wait.
