Facebook ads for a local business: where to start

Updated 9 October 2026, a 3-minute read

Your first Facebook ad needs six things: a Facebook Page that looks open for business, one clear offer, a sensible area around your shop, a budget that runs for at least 10 days, a simple design, and someone ready to answer every enquiry. Get those right and the ad has a fair chance.

Get your Page ready

The ad runs from your Facebook Page, and curious customers will tap through to it. Make sure it has your shop name, a clear profile photo or logo, the address, phone number, opening hours and a handful of recent posts. A Page with no posts since 2021 makes people wonder if you are still open.

If you plan to run WhatsApp ads, link a WhatsApp Business number to the Page now. It saves a delay later.

Ask a friend who has never been to your shop to open the Page on their phone. If they cannot tell within a few seconds what you sell and where you are, fix that before spending on ads.

Pick one offer and one area

An ad that says "best quality, all services available" gives people no reason to act today. Choose one thing: bridal makeup packages from ₹15,000, a free demo class for the new JEE batch, 20% off on monsoon pest control. One offer, said plainly, with a price if you can.

For the area, think about how far your customers really travel. A neighbourhood salon may draw from 3 to 5 km. A furniture showroom or a wedding photographer can target the whole city. Showing the ad to people who will never come wastes money, so start tight and widen if enquiries are slow.

Age and gender help too, but keep them broad on a first ad. A tuition class should remember that parents, not students, often make the call.

Set a budget you can hold for 10 days

Meta takes a few days to learn which people respond to your ad, so the first two or three days are often the weakest. Decide on an amount you are comfortable spending over at least 10 days and leave the ad alone during that time.

Keep a simple record: money spent, enquiries received, and how many became customers. After the run, that last number tells you more than any report.

Ask each new customer how they heard about you for those ten days. Some people see the ad, do not enquire, and walk in a week later, and you will only know if you ask.

Keep the design simple

Use one strong photo of the real thing: your cakes, your classroom, a finished kitchen. Add a short line of text on the image at most, with the offer or price. Then write two or three sentences of ad text that say what you offer, where you are, and what to do next.

Meta reviews every ad before it runs, and says most are reviewed within 24 hours. Plain, honest ads pass easily.

Common first-ad mistakes

Most first ads that disappoint fail for ordinary reasons, and almost all of them are fixable on the next run.

The most expensive one is the last on this list. A paid enquiry that nobody calls back is money thrown away, so decide before the ad starts who will answer leads and by when. Our app puts every enquiry in a Leads tab with one-tap call and WhatsApp, plus reminders for follow-ups, which helps if you tend to forget.

  • Targeting the whole state for a shop people only visit from nearby
  • No offer or price, just the shop name and a logo
  • A poster crowded with text, phone numbers and ten services
  • Stopping the ad after two days because the first day was slow
  • Changing the image and audience every morning
  • Leads that sit for a day before anyone calls

Questions

Do I need a website to run Facebook ads?

No. A lead form ad collects the enquiry inside Facebook or Instagram, and a WhatsApp ad opens a chat with you. Your Facebook Page is enough.

Will my ad show on Instagram too?

It can. Ads set up through Meta can show on both Facebook and Instagram, and people on either app can enquire the same way.

How soon will enquiries come in?

Meta says most ads are reviewed within 24 hours, and the ad starts showing once approved. Enquiries can arrive on the first day, though the first few days are often slower while Meta learns who responds.
