What is lead generation? A shop owner’s guide

Updated 11 October 2026, a 3-minute read

A lead is a person who has shown interest in what you sell and given you a way to reach them, usually a phone number. Lead generation is the work of getting more of those people. A tuition class that collects 40 parents’ numbers before the new term has done lead generation, whatever it calls it.

A lead is not a customer yet

Someone who walks past your shop is a stranger. Someone who stops and asks "how much for the three-seater?" is a lead. Someone who pays is a customer. Most of selling happens in the middle step, and that is the step lead generation feeds.

For businesses where people buy on the spot, such as a tea stall or a kirana store, leads matter less. They matter a lot where the customer thinks first: coaching, furniture, solar panels, wedding photography, a gym membership, a dental implant.

How small businesses already collect leads

You have probably been doing it for years. The visitors’ book at the showroom is a lead list. So is the stack of enquiry forms at the coaching class reception, and the missed calls from a newspaper insert.

These methods work, but they depend on people coming to you first. They are also slow to count. Ask a shop owner how many enquiries the last pamphlet run brought and the answer is usually a guess.

  • Walk-ins who leave a number
  • Calls from a hoarding, pamphlet or newspaper ad
  • Referrals from existing customers
  • Enquiries on a Google Business listing
  • Messages on WhatsApp, Facebook or Instagram

Lead generation online

Online, the same thing happens faster. You show an offer to people in the areas you serve, and the interested ones reply with their details. On Facebook and Instagram this is done with a lead form ad: the person taps the ad, a short form opens with their name and number filled in, and they press send.

A second kind of ad opens a WhatsApp chat instead. The person lands in your WhatsApp with a question typed out. You get their number either way, and you know which ad it came from.

What a lead costs, and how many turn into sales

For local businesses in India, our app plans with ₹45 to ₹65 per lead from a form ad and ₹35 to ₹55 per WhatsApp chat. Trades with bigger bills, such as solar or interiors, tend to sit at the higher end.

Not every lead buys. A furniture store in Kirti Nagar, Delhi, that gets 100 leads might speak to 60, see 20 in the showroom and sell to 8. At ₹60 a lead that is ₹6,000 for 8 sofas sold, or ₹750 per sale. Run that sum with your own numbers before you decide whether ads pay.

Why speed decides most of it

A lead cools quickly. The mother who filled a form for abacus classes at 9 pm has likely filled two more by morning. The class that rings her first, politely, usually gets the admission.

Keep every lead in one place with the date, what they asked and when to call again. A notebook is fine if you use it daily. An app that reminds you is better on a busy Saturday.

Questions

What is lead generation in simple words?

Finding people who are interested in your product and getting their contact details so you can follow up.

Is lead generation only for big companies?

No. A salon collecting numbers for a bridal package is doing the same thing as an insurance company, only with fewer people and a smaller budget.

Do I need a website to generate leads?

No. A lead form ad keeps the form inside Facebook or Instagram, and a WhatsApp ad needs only your business number. A Facebook Page is enough to start.

Is it safe to buy a lead list?

Avoid it. Those people never asked to hear from you, most won’t be in your area, and calling them can get your number reported as spam.
